Your eyes met over the squat rack and she’s flashed you a smile at the shake bar, but how can you introduce yourself to your gym crush at the right time? If anyone can give expert advice on mastering this knotty art, it’s Brazilian Juliana Campos (below). The personal trainer has worked all over the world, and has experienced more approaches than Heathrow.
She has a favourite story from everywhere she’s worked (and most of them seem to confirm national stereotypes). In a gym back home in Brazil, a man started dancing in front of her, and when that didn’t work he began a striptease. Juliana wasn’t impressed, and left before he got down to his thong.
She then moved to the Emirates (not as a direct result of the striptease, but it didn’t help). In Abu Dhabi she found herself as personal trainer to senior members of the royal family for three years, but less happily she had to fend off unwanted male attention. A rich but clueless local once walked up to her in a gym and hardly saying hello, handed her his iPhone and a string of passwords. When she asked what was going on, the man said she should put in her phone number and then add herself into all his social media accounts.
Juliana is now based in London, where a man told her ‘Your squat position is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen I my life.’ But that didn’t work either. Be your PB with her tips
At least look as if you’re there solely for the exercise – nothing is more obvious (and unattractive) than a guy cruising gyms for girls than someone that clearly never exercises.
Smell nice. A decent antiperspirant should do it, and don’t be afraid to add a splash of fragrance.
Wear decent gym-wear. But actually wear it. There’s nothing wrong with tight, but topless is a very different matter.
If you like a girl make sure she sees you, but be discreet. Just walk past her and leave it for her to follow up with a glance in your direction.
Train with a gang of other guys. Nothing is less attractive than you cheering on your wolfpack by the bench.
Stare. No matter how much you might want to, she’ll appreciate that you’re the one man in the room not checking out her lunges.
Interrupt a girl while she’s training. It’s just rude.
Preen. Ever. Mirrors are there so you can master your technique, so look at the area of the body you’re working out, not your beautifully sculpted physique.
Over-train. Yes, be fit and toned, but truly enormous assets look a little like you’ve got an unhealthy obsession.
